3 Scott County, Virginia Jones Family Baskets, all signed on handles by Jesse Jones, born 1907. 1st item: Large white oak, rib-type split basket. Kidney form with converging ribs, wrapped rim and arched handle secured by nails. 11" H x 13" W. 2nd item: Medium white oak, rib-type split basket, kidney form with converging ribs, wrapped rim and low arched handle secured by nails. 8 1/2" H x 11" W 3rd item: Small white oak, rib-type split basket, kidney form with converging ribs, wrapped rim and low arched handle. 6 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W. Early 20th century. Biography: Jesse Jones was a mountain basketmaker who lived in isolated mountainous Scott County, Virginia. His work is featured in the book BASKETS AND BASKET MAKERS IN SOUTHERN APPALACHIA, written by John Rice Irwin (1982). Condition: All overall good condition. 1st item: Small paint fleck on bottom of basket, as well as minor stain spots. Surface grime on interior. 2nd item: Moderate surface grime to sides and interior. 3rd item: Moderate surface grime on interior, mild grime on exterior.
