Samuel Houston signed Tennessee land document, granting John Smith 160 acres in the Hiwassee District "situate in the first Range, East of the Meriden, Fourth Township, Twenty first section, and the North West corner of said Quarter of said Section…" dated July 6, 1828. 12 1/4" H x 7 3/4" W. Note: Sam Houston's term as Tennessee governor lasted from 1827 until 1829, when he resigned and moved to Texas. Houston (1793-1863) later became the President of Texas and its Governor. He is the only person in American History to be elected governor of two states by popular vote. CONDITION: Overall good condition considering age. 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" area of dampstaining to Houston signature does not affect clarity of signature. Foxing spots, largest 1", surface of sheet. 1 5/8" area of separation to lower fold line, does not affect signature. Tears along fold lines, largest 1/2". Envelope in worn condition to be expected from age.
