Kentucky Needlework Sampler by Jane Rogers, dated 1831. Silk on linen, cross stitched, with plain border, double upper case alphabet, 2 lower case alphabets and numbers, separated by rows of geometric designs, over a field decorated with pictorial images including 2 baskets of flowers and trees, the large center tree with bird atop branches, over a line reading, Jane Rogers her work aged 11 years 1831. Stained walnut molded frame with old Lyzon (Nashville) framing label en verso. 12-1/2" x 9" sight, 16-1/4" x 13" framed. Sampler is accompanied by a file of genealogical information on Jane Rogers, born 1820 in Nelson County, Kentucky (just east of Elizabethtown). Jane married Thomas Marshall in 1840 and had three sons; she died in 1856 at the age of 36 and was buried in the Middle Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Larue County, Kentucky. Condition: General fading and discoloration, 1/4" dark stains at left center and lower center (near base of tree) with other lighter scattered stains in alphabet/number rows and at lower edge of sampler. Sampler has not been examined out of frame.
