An Italian inlaid writing bureau or slant front desk, consisting of walnut and other European mixed woods, with scrolling foliate inlaid panels throughout the surface. The hinged lid opens to reveal a center well flanked by four inlaid drawers and one secret slide compartment, above three serpentine drawers flanked by canted, carved, and inlaid stiles, the whole resting on bracket feet. 45 3/4 in. H x 50 in. W x 25 in. D. Northern Italy/Lombardy region, late 18th century/early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Dr. James and Rebecca Whicker, Knoxville, TN.
CONDITION: Scattered wood shrinkage to the surface with scattered losses and repairs to the veneer, especially around the lid edges, drawer edges, and escutcheons. Keys are not present. Two feet are fitted with later castors.
