American Mahogany Chippendale secretary bookcase, poplarand white pine secondary, two part construction. The upper section with broken-pediment bonnet top with central flame finial, plain frieze and paneled doors opening to reveal three moveable shelves and four drawers along the base. Lower section with hinged lid opening to reveal a fitted interior with 4 shaped pigeonholes over three drawers to each side with a central prospect door, above four graduated dovetailed drawers with molded edges, brass bail handle pulls, and bracket feet. Top drawer is divided into three compartments. 103 1/2" total H (52 1/2" top/51" base) x 46" W x 23 3/4" D. New England, late 18th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Older refinish. Overall general wear, abrasions and some staining to interior. Wood shrinkage to slant front lid and frieze. Finial possibly replaced and old repaired break to center pediment. Feet are older replacements, with newer added glue blocks.
