Set of six (6) American, probably Massachusetts or New York, Sheraton side chairs, maple and ash, each painted green with European style landscape scenes to the top rail, gilt painted accents to the seat and legs, turned and beaded back slats, matching turned and beaded front stretchers, and balloon cane seats. 33 3/4" H x 17 3/4" W x 16 1/2" D. 1st quarter 19th century. Note: A pair of similar chairs in the collection of the Peabody Museum of Salem with "descriptive paintings" on green backgrounds, thought to have been painted by Samuel Bartoll, are featured in the book "American Painted Furniture" by Dean A. Fales, Jr. on page 169, Figures 272 and 273.
PROVENANCE: Private Williamson County, Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: All with general use wear including scattered wear and losses to paint, most retain 90% or more of the paint. Areas of inpainting visible under UV light inspection seem to correspond with areas of wear and losses to paint (see UV light photos). Some chairs with crazing to the surface. One with more recent cane seat and old breaks and losses to front of the seat and back of the crest.
