Earl Edward Collins (Connecticut/New York, 1925-1992) oil on canvas maritime painting depicting the clipper ship Sovereign of the Seas, an American flag flying at the stern and a lighthouse visible in the distance at right. Signed "Earl Collins," lower right. Inscribed to back of frame: "Sovereign of the Seas / Built 1852 by Donald McKay at East Boston / Lost straits of Malacca – 1859 / First ship to break 400 nautical miles in 24 hrs." Housed in a rustic wood frame with burlap mat and wood fillet. Sight: 8 1/2" H x11 1/2 " W. Framed:16 1/2" " H x 19 1/2" W.
