American School, oil on canvas portrait of President George Washington, after the Athaneum portrait by Gilbert Stuart. Unsigned. Housed in a Victorian giltwood frame with floral carved corner ornaments and oval opening. Sight (oval opening) – 29" x 24". Canvas – 30" x 25". Frame overall – 40" x 35". Late 19th to early 20th century. Provenance: Nashville, Tennessee estate. CONDITION: 2" area of mechanical cracking to lower left quadrant near collar and scattered craquelure and tenting; blacklight reveals some scattered small areas of inpainting to forehead, bridge of nose, cheeks, and chin, a few other scattered spots to background. Frame has scattered areas of edge losses (up to 11 1/2" L) and has been overpainted with gold paint.
