Lot 251: Stephen Iwasko Bas Relief Portrait of George Washington

Stephen Luke Iwasko (Ukrainian/American, 1883-1972), folk art bas relief carved bust length portrait of President George Washington, with carved sides simulating a frame. Lower edge of frame with carved title and signature, "George Washington Carved by Stephen L. Iwasko". Circa 1930. Sight: 19" H x 15 1/2" W. Frame: 22" H x 18 1/2" W. Note: a carved joint portrait of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington by Stephen Iwasko is in the collection of the American Folk Art Museum. Little else is known about Iwasko, a Ukrainian immigrant who served in WWI and WWII and lived in Ohio for many years prior to his death in California at the age of 89.

PROVENANCE: The collection of Ronnie Steine, Nashville, TN.

CONDITION: Overall excellent condition. Enclosed under glass that may or may not be original; glass has a small chip to upper left edge. Outer frame may or may not be original and exhibits some water spotting.
