Flemish or French Verdure Tapestry, wool, depicting the mythological Hermes or Mercury watching on as a man with a boar at his feet tips his hat to a maiden in a forest setting. Mounted to a later foliate needlework border, with a hanging board attached to top edge of border en verso. Overall: approx. 48 in. H x 81 in. W. Late 17th to 18th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Three tears (3-5 in. long) to upper section of tapestry, near top border, with several other separations, small losses, and spots of reweaving throughout, overall good condition. Backed with tan linen, which is coming loose from tapestry at bottom.
