English or Continental silk embroidered toilette or dressing / writing box. The embroidery features intricate and well-executed scenes of figures in landscapes: a dog chasing a rabbit, a squirrel, flowers and a castle. The hinged cover lifts to reveal a fitted interior with 4 glass bottles and 2 glass inkwells and the original mirror (broken). Engraved brass latch and handles. 6 1/2 in. H x 12 1/2 in. L x 9 1/2 in. D. Also included is a framed silk embroidered picture with Biblical scene of the baby Moses being discovered in a basket in the river by Pharaoh’s daughter. Under glass in a later ebonized frame measuring 10 in. x 10 in. Both items 18th century or earlier.

CONDITION:
1st item: the original embroidery survives in relatively good condition with wear, especially at the latch, fraying, some fading, and scattered losses consistent with age and use. Two glass bottles are stuck in their compartments. Mirror broken. 2nd item: Fragile condition with fraying, losses and fading; some ground disintegration. Not examined out of frame.
