The exhibition placard for the quilt reads, “Despite extensive research, the artist who made this quilt remains unknown. It is one of several works by this quilter, who was probably active in the Upper Northeastern United States, whose work is characterized by elaborate appliques of trees, flowers, and birds. The example is especially unusual as it includes images of tombstones. According to oral tradition, it was made by a woman as a memorial to children in her care who died untimely deaths”.
