1st item: After Hokusai (Japan, 1760-1849) reproduction of a drawing depicting a bijin or woman in the act of undressing. Printed on very thin Japan paper. Unframed. 12 1/4" H x 8 3/4" W. Literature: No. 44 in Gerhard Schack, Japanische Handzeichnungen, Hamburg, 1975.
2nd item: After Toshusai Sharaku (Japan, fl. 1794-1795) woodblock print portrait of the actor Iwai Hanshiro IV as Shigenoi, a wet-nurse, originally published 1794. With silver kirazuri background. Unframed. 15" H x 10 1/4" W.
3rd item: Kunisada Utagawa AKA Toyokuni III (Japan, 1786-1864) woodblock print portrait of a Kabuki actor with a lantern. Signed Toyokuni in red Toshidama cartouche, center left. With 1849-1853 Magomi-Hama censor's seal, center right. Unframed. 14 3/8" H x 9 7/8" W.
4th item: Attributed to Utagawa Yoshimori (Japan, fl. 1830s-1880s) woodblock print of an ama–or abalone diver–in the manner of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japan, 1798-1861). With unidentified signature and seal, lower right. Backing inscribed "Yoshimori." Unframed. 10 1/4" H x 4 7/8" W.
5th item: Chikanobu Toyohara AKA Chikanobu Yoshu (Japan, 1838-1912) woodblock print, A Chronicle of the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani at Suma, 1898, one sheet from a triptych. Unframed. 14 1/2" H x 9 3/4" W.
PROVENANCE: A Nashville, Tennessee Estate.
CONDITION: 1st item with toning to edges and soiling to lower left quadrant. Fingerprints to upper right quadrant, outside of image. Negligible losses to edges, plus pinpoint punctures to upper left and right corners. 2nd item with right and lower edges are trimmed. Print is taped to glassine. 3rd item with creasing plus handling wear and soiling to edges, especially upper edge outside of image, and 3/4" x 1/4" area of loss to left edge. With negligible foxing.4th item with toning, fading, and creasing. Sheet is affixed to backing along upper edge. 5th in overall very good condition with minor soiling to left edge, primarily marginal, plus minor foxing.
