1st item: French perfume box with tortoiseshell, foliate brass boulle inlay, satin-lined lid, ebonized sides, and fitted velvet lining, containing four glass perfume bottles with square cut stoppers; two stoppers have gilt foliate design. Retains key. 3 5/8" H x 7" W x 3 3/8" D. Third quarter of the 19th century. 2nd item: English Regency penwork tobacco box with convex lid having illustrated scene from Robert Burns' poem "Tam O'Shanter" to hinged lid and foliate decoration to body. 1" H x 3 1/8" W x 2" D. Early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Tina McWhorter Trust; from the collection of John and Tina McWhorter, Memphis, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Scattered age splits to tortoiseshell/boulle commensurate with age. Minor separation to satin lining. Two stoppers for perfume bottles are likely replacements. Minute errant mark or residue to interior edge. Locking mechanism is operational. 2nd item: Minor scattered surface wear commensurate with age. Remnants of foil lining to interior.
