Victorian black lacquer papier mache jewelry box with inlaid mother of pearl architectural decoration to painted landscape scenes with a pair of figures to the lid, foliate gilt designs throughout exterior and interior, and serpentine front. Lid opens to reveal painted floral sprays and fitted compartment with red velvet components. Two doors with floral sprays to interior open to four graduated drawers with rosette pulls, paper lined interior and undersides, and various velvet or fabric-lined compartments. 9 1/4" H x 10 1/2" W x 9 1/2" D. English or French, mid to late 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Illinois Collection.
CONDITION: Craquelure and minor wear to gilt throughout commensurate with age. Minor losses to corner of lid. Fabric and paper linings with scattered minor wear and fading.
