Middle Tennessee Hepplewhite Federal Sugar Chest, cherry with poplar secondary wood. Hinged single board top with cleated ends, over a locking dovetailed case with original divided interior supported on a base with scratch-beaded dovetailed drawer and four square tapering legs. Original oval Federal brasses. Exhibited, the Frist Art Museum, "Art of Tennessee," 2006, and illustrated in the catalog, fig. 46, page 82. 35 1/2"H x 26" W x 17 1/2"D. Probably Davidson or Williamson County, TN, Circa 1810.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee Collection, purchased by an antiques dealer in Davidson County in the 1960s.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition in an older refinished surface. Top molding possibly an old replacement. Old, possibly original hinges. Old copper repair to back along base. Rear stops added to drawer. Top has an old lock repair scar. Minor, age-appropriate wear and shrinkage throughout.
