Southern Civil War era quilt, Whig Rose variant pattern, circa 1860. Hand applique and quilted cotton with thin cotton batting and white gauzy cotton backing. Binding is a separate solid green binding, same as used throughout design. Elaborate feathered wreath quilting in the white open areas, with applique vines on all four sides and rose buds at cross points that create a well-balanced and harmonious design. 87 in x 76 in. Note: The pattern is whig rose with pieced centers, a regional characteristics of quilts made in Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina in the mid 1800s. The dark quilting thread matches applique colors on the top which is also a regional trait.
PROVENANCE: A Nashville area estate.
CONDITION: General yellowing of white cloth throughout front and back as well as some water stains. One corner does have a tear at binding.
