Sam Houston signed land document, granting John Davis, assignee of Frederick Davis (father of John Davis), five and a half acres in the first district of Davidson County, "on the west side of the Big Harpeth River and on the lower side of the narrows bend…" dated Sept. 25, 1828. 12 1/4" x 15 7/8". Note: Sam Houston's term as Tennessee governor lasted from 1827 until 1829, when he resigned and moved to Texas. Houston (1793-1863) later became the President of Texas and its Governor. Provenance: the estate of John Davis descendant Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. CONDITION: Light toning and fading, with black mark running 7" along side, fold across Houston. Couple of partial tears at fold lines.
