Paul Jacoulet (France/Japan, 1902-1960) Japanese woodblock print on wove paper, “Dans La Nature, Angur “(According to Nature, Angaur). A nude woman lies on her stomach while surrounded by blooming flowers. From the edition of 350. Pencil signed above owl hop mark, lower right. With printed title to lower margin, seals of carver and printer to left margin. Artist’s watermark (his initials and name in kanji) at upper left. Red stamp numbered 255/350 en verso. Sheet: 14 5/16 in. H x 18 3/4 in. W. Biographical Note: “Paul Jacoulet was a French, Japan-based woodblock print artist known for a style that mixed the traditional ukiyo-e style and techniques developed by the artist himself. Paul Jacoulet’s creative period was 1939-1960. Jacoulet is considered one of the few western artists to have mastered the art of woodblock printing sufficiently to be recognized in Japan. His works are almost all of people, either portraits or full body images capturing some background details.” (Source: Northeastern University)
CONDITION: Overall good condition, with vibrant colors. Minor marginal toning, not visible within sight area, and remnants of old mounting tissue to upper edge en verso. 1 inch x 1/2 inch area of negligible thinning to lower left en verso, likely from removed sticker or adhesive label.
