Gilt lacquer chinoiserie sewing box, filled with needlework implements. Rectangular case with canted corners, the lid and base decorated with gilt vignettes of figures engaged in various activities and Asian landscapes, amid scrolling foliate decoration. Raised on gilt and enameled winged dragon feet. Hinged lid opens to reveal various sewing implements in a removable fitted interior, including two lift top compartments decorated with Chinese figures in landscapes. Implements include thimble, thread holders, and bobbins, many with intricate carving, together with other various sewing tools. Box also contains a lower drawer fitted with a central decorated lift top compartment flanked by dividers. Two brass side handles. 6 1/4" H x 14 3/4" W x 10 3/8" D. Chinese, 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Chattanooga, TN collection.
CONDITION: Box in overall very good condition with scattered minor use wear, mainly to edges, old repair to left side of lower drawer. A few implements with minor damage, most overall very good condition.
