Robert Houston Armstrong (Tennessee, 1825-1896) oil on canvas still life depicting dried corn hanging from a nail. Possible faint signature lower left. Old label en verso reads "Painted by Robert Houston Armstrong". Old restoration label en verso. Housed in a simple wood frame with gilt painted beaded liner. Sight – 16 1/2" H x 13 1/2" W. Framed – 24 1/4" x 21 3/8". Provenance: Property of a direct descendant of Adelia Armstrong Lutz. Note: Armstrong was the father of Adeila Armstrong Lutz. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and designed his home "Bleak House" which still stands today in Knoxville. He was a skilled amateur painter. CONDITION: Overall good condition. Hole patched lower left with inpainting. Stretcher creases barely evident.
