Set of five (5) graduated Scott County, Virginia baskets signed by Jesse Jones (b.1907). All buttocks form comprised of white oak, rib-type slit construction with handles secured by nails at the rim. All signed in pencil "Jesse Jones" on the handle; the smallest additionally dated 1982. Ranging in size from 7 3/4" H x 8 1/2" W x 9" D to 14" H x 14" W x 16" D. Biography: Jesse Jones was a mountain basket weaver who lived in the isolated mountains of Scott County, VA. His work is featured in the book BASKETS AND BASKET MAKERS IN SOUTHERN APPALACHIA, written by John Rice Irwin (1982).
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Donley and Eunice Hill, Andersonville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Both large baskets with separations to weavers at the rim, and losses to weavers around ribbing. All others with overall light use wear, some nails with oxidation.
