Southern Chippendale figured maple secretary bookcase, with secondary woods including yellow pine and poplar. Two-part construction. The upper case features a quadruple stepped cornice, paneled doors flanked by inset quarter column stiles. Lower case with a hinged fold-down writing surface and fitted interior with serpentine drawers, shaped pigeon hole dividers, and central prospect door with raised tombstone decoration, and a bank of hidden drawers. Four lower graduated dovetailed lip-molded drawers with brass bail pulls, on tall bracket feet. 89 in. H x 42 in. W x 22 1/2 in. D. Attributed to Southwest Virginia, late 18th century.
CONDITION:
Overall good condition with wear commensurate with age and use. Proper right corner of cornice with two small strips of later molding, upper case with two patch repairs along proper right front stile. Lower case with small molding replacement along upper proper left rear corner, some minor patch repairs to drawer fronts. Old interior ink stains. Appears to retain original brasses. Proper left return with a thin crack, minor separations to proper right return, old insect damage (not active), scattered surface marks and abrasions.
