Tennessee, likely Sumner County, Sheraton stand or table. Cherry primary, poplar secondary. Plain top over two dovetailed drawers, the upper drawer having a divided interior, bold ring-turned and tapered legs ending in ball feet. 30 1/2 in. H x 24 in. W x 17 1/2 in. D. Circa 1830.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Joe W. Saunders. Descended in the family of Hubbard Saunders (1765-1829), who settled Saundersville and started the Methodist church there. Hubbard was an acquaintance of President Andrew Jackson and raced horses with him. This piece through his son, Hubbard H. Saunders to his son, Jacob Saunders to Joe W. Saunders, grandfather of the consignor. A sugar sideboard from the same family is also included in this auction.
CONDITION: Older refinish surface. Some staining and fading to top. Shrinkage cracks to top and sides. Lacking one interior divider. Lacking upper lock and keys. Scattered wear and abrasions.
