American School, 19th century, oil on canvas portrait of President Andrew Jackson (b. 1767-d. 1845, in office 1829-1837), dated en verso 1829, likely after the 1825 engraving by Peter Maverick from the oil of Jackson painted by Joseph Wood. (Note that the date on the back of the canvas could refer to the date painted or the date Jackson took office as president). Unsigned. Sight – 27 3/4" x 24 1/2", Frame – 32 5/8" x 29 5/8". 2nd quarter of the 19th century. Provenance: Found in a Minnesota estate. Condition: Overall craquelure and stretcher creases. Canvas slightly loose in frame. Blacklight reveals restoration in background upper left quadrant, along right cheek (his left) and below his right lapel in coat area (his left side).
