1st item: Afghan Ghandaran style ceramic Buddha head with half-closed eyes, mounted to a square wooden stand with old sticker label. 11 1/2" H x 3 1/2" W x 4" D. Museum documentation states circa 4th century. 2nd item: Japanese Ghandaran style carved wooden Buddha head with closed eyes and inset stones, mounted to a square wooden stand. 9 1/4" H x 4 3/8" W x 3 3/8" D. Museum documentation states Kamakura period or earlier.
PROVENANCE: Deaccessioned by the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts Foundation to benefit the acquisitions fund.
CONDITION: Both items with surface wear and discoloration commensurate with age. 1st item: Loss to back of head measuring 4 1/2" x 2 1/2"; loose in mounting. 2nd item: Loss to one ear measuring 3/4" x 3/8"; scattered insect damage, primarily to neck area.
