English Regency rosewood mother of pearl inlaid ladies compendium or jewelry box; sarcophagus form with reeded edges, two loop handles, and foliate inlay. Hinged lid opens to red paper and fabric-lined compartments; two front doors with gilt mandala and foliate designs to the interior enclose two fabric-lined partitioned drawers over one lap desk drawer comprised of sloped lid with leather insert, four compartments containing two silver-lidded glass inkwells, and felt-lined writing slope that opens to paper storage. 13" H x 13" W x 9" D. Second quarter of the 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Urbana, Illinois collection.
CONDITION: Minor scattered wear to surface and interior linings. Inkwells with use wear and tarnishing to lids. Minor scattered losses to mother of pearl inlay, largest area measuring 1" L.
