Two (2) George Ayers Cress (Alabama/Tennessee, 1921-2008) works. 1st item: Abstract oil on canvas in pastel colors, depicting bathers by the seashore. Signed and dated "George Cress, 1963" lower left of image. Housed in a painted wooden frame. Sight – 11 1/2" H x 15 1/4" W. Framed – 15 3/4" H x 19 3/4" W. 2nd item: Black and white abstract watercolor of a beach scene. Signed, dated, and inscribed "For Joan- George Cress – Long Island Aug. 4, 1963", lower left of image. Sight- 11 3/8" H x 13 1/2" W. Framed – 12 3/8" H x 14 7/8" W. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artist's Bluebook and Landscape and Genre Painting in Tennessee 1810-1985: Tennessee Historical Quarterly Vol. XLIV No. 2): George Cress was born in Anniston, Alabama and studied at Emory University, American University, and the University of Georgia, where he studied under fellow Southern contemporary artist Lamar Dodd. He was a central figure in Chattanooga's arts community and served as President of the Tennessee Arts Council and sat on the board of the Hunter Museum of Art. From 1951-1984 was painter in residence at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga; the Cress Gallery of Art at UTC is named in his honor. CONDITION: 1st item: Overall very good condition. 2nd item: Minor scuffs on surface of paper.
