Edmund Adler Rode (Austria, 1876-1965) oil on canvas genre scene of a child standing next to a doll carriage and gazing at a bisque doll. A ball and bouquet of roses are at her feet, while a quilt drapes a nearby bedpost, all against a backdrop of floral wallpaper. Signed upper right: Edmund Adler (overpainted to read Edmund A. Rode – see biography notes). Molded giltwood frame. Sight – 30 1/2" H x 21" W. Framed – 34 1/2" H x 25" W. Provenance: Private Middle Tennessee collection. Biography: Edmund Adler was known for his talent in conveying natural color and expression. He painted still lifes, rural and genre scenes, but children were among his favored subjects. During World War I, Adler was taken prisoner and sent to Siberia. However, he was still allowed to paint and send works to galleries, and it is believed to have been during this period when he used the pseudonym Edmund A. Rode (sometimes painted over the name Adler, as is here). Wartime could account for the visual mood of this painting, which is relatively somber in comparison to some of Adler's other works featuring children. Condition: Small repaired tear to doll's skirt area and larger repair to far lower left edge near carriage wheel. Couple of scattered minute flakes to quilt area and girl's shoe. Scattered minor craquelure, most notably to girl's hand and doll's face. Frame is not original and appears regilded.
