East Tennessee, Roane County, hand pieced quilt, Blazing Star variant pattern, by America Waller Goodwin (1835-1893), rendered with all cotton fabric in predominant colors of brown, red, blue, and green on a white ground. Consisting of 14 1/2 blocks set 4 x 4, separated by 5 1/2" sashing and 8-point star corner blocks, and no outer borders. Heavily quilted in diagonal and straight lines of varying widths creating a secondary pattern with diamond designs in the sashing. Back with machine embroidered label and printed photo of maker reading "Made by America Waller Goodwin 1835-1893). 73" W x 81" L. 4th Qtr. 19th century. Note: Additional documentation, including copies of an appraisal by Rebecca Harris circa 1994 and Quilts of Tennessee Survey Form available with the purchase of this lot.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with strong secure seams. Heavy staining to the back with minor stains to the front. Some fading to orginal fabric colors on front. Losses to red fabric.
