American pieced cotton quilt, Sunburst pattern, comprised of lapis blue and red printed cotton with alternating medallions of brown and rose cotton chintz within ivory squares; embroidered ivory ground and backing. Approximately 114" x 110". Second quarter of the 19th century. Note: This pieced "Sunburst" pattern was popular in the Mid-Atlantic region in the first half of the 19th century. The quilt's large size, dense quilting, and the imported print fabrics suggest it was made in the 1830s-1840s.
PROVENANCE: Descended in the Hazlehurst family of Baltimore, Maryland; sold to a private collector as lot 712 in our Jan. 2022 auction.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition for age. Sunburst blocks containing a chintz print with a brown background show consistent fabric loss with batting showing through. Those made of the Lapis Blue and Red prints and the strip borders do not show any fabric deterioration. Scattered dark and rust colored stains up to 1/2"; scattered areas of light grime and discoloration.
