Two drawings by illustration artist Mary Caroline Northern (Tennessee, 1916-1979). 1ST ITEM: Pen and watercolor/ink drawing of women in a dressing room. Signed lower right, "M.C. Northern." Nashville framing company label en verso.Condition: light spots to mat, otherwise excellent. 9" x 7" sight, 17" x 13-3/4" framed. 2ND ITEM: Pen and watercolor on card of man and woman dancing. Condition: small amount of wear to frame, otherwise excellent condition. 7" x 5 7/8"sight, 13 3/4" x 12 1/8" framed. Both circa 1930. Provenance: collection of Christine and Clarence Holt, Nashville. Biography: M.C. Northern attended the fashionable Ward Belmont School in Nashville and in 1925 completed a correspondence course inart with the Federal School of Illustrating and Cartooning. A great lover of magazines, her passion was illustration art and most of her works were executed in the Art Deco style. She appears to have found little commercial market for herwork, however, and she died in poverty as a recluse. Her work began gaining attention after her death with an exhibit at Belmont University's Leu Gallery.
