Oil on canvas landscape, attributed to Thomas Worthington Whittredge (New Jersey/New York/Ohio, 1820 – 1910) titled "An August Morning" and inscribed en verso " Switzerland". The painting depicts a road winding beside a river or lake, with mountains in the background. Housed in a carved giltwood and composition frame with fluted, cove molded edges and carved corner ornamentation. Sight – 12 1/8" H x 15" W. Framed – 18 1/2" H x 21 1/2" W. Biography: (Courtesy of AskArt: The Artists' Bluebook): Whittredge is regarded as an important artist of the Hudson River School, but also spent considerable time in Europe. He studied art at the Dusseldorf Academy, a major art school of the period, where he became friends with Albert Bierstadt. He also studied in Rome. Whittredge is said to have paid for his voyages in Europe by selling landscapes painted abroad. Once back in the United States, he painted many Hudson River School landscapes and made several trips out West. He served as President of the National Academy of Design from 1874-1875. Condition: Overall very good condition with relined canvas. Blacklight reveals a couple of circular dots near middle of painting that could indicate inpainting and some lighter fluorescent spots on canvas that could indicate uneven revarnishing.
