Framed Humphrey Lhuyd Map of Wales, "Cambriae Typus", 1578, from the famous world atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" by Abraham Ortelius, first published in1570. It contained two maps, one of England and one of Wales. This was the first map published of either country. This map of Wales has French text and bears the folio/map number 6C which indicates that this was from the first French edition published in 1578. Various features depicted on the map include a divider caliper in the lower left-hand corner, a cartouche, a sailing ship in Cardigan Bay, as well as a sea monster in the Irish Sea. Sight: 15-1/4" H x 20" W. Framed: 24-3/4" H x 29-3/8" W. Provenance: Estate of A. Welling LaGrone Jr.. Nashville, TN. Purchased in Great Britain in 1998 from Claymore Antiques. Letter from Claymore Antiques en verso. Condition: Overall very good condition. One small tear to lower right margin.
