East Tennessee, Knox or Roane County, Hepplewhite inlaid walnut and cherry bureau or chest of drawers, yellow pine and poplar secondary. Plain conforming top with mahogany veneer edge, sitting flush with case, over four graduated dovetailed and cockbeaded drawers with diamond-inlaid escutcheons, line inlay and oval brasses, having quarter fan inlay to corners; the base with barber pole inlay transitioning to a shaped skirt with inlaid semicircular fan to the center, resting on splayed French feet. Hidden dovetails joining the top with case sides. Feet shaped from the case sides. 39 1/2" H X 40" W X 19 1/2" D. Circa 1810-1820. Provenance: Discovered in a Roane County, TN estate in the 1990's.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Older refinished surface. Brass pulls appear to be original. Drawer surrounds with some old patches and losses. Part of the lower foot facings (1 3/4"H) are replacements but the chest retains the original shaped feet formed from the drawer sides and blocking on the front feet and the shaped support on the rear back left foot. The rear back right foot is a replacement as are the plain brackets on the back of the rear feet. Some losses to edge of skirt and a couple of old replaced spots of inlay in the fan. A couple of veneer losses and replacements to top edge.
