Angel Botello (Puerto Rico, 1913-1986) oil on board painting, depicting Haitian women dancing with a man playing a drum. Signed upper right "Botello" in red. Provenance: purchased directly from the artist by the consignor's mother and stepfather, Whitley Jarman Jordon Potter and Clarence Carlyle Potter Jr., in the fall of 1956 on their honeymoon in Haiti. Angel Bottello was born in Spain and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in France, but moved back to Spain in 1935 when he won an art scholarship to the San Fernando Academy in Madrid. The onset of the Spanish Civil War forced him to abandon his studies and join the army as a cartographer. He traveled frequently afterward, working in Haiti and Cuba, and eventually settled in Puerto Rico, where he worked in a number of different mediums including paintings, sculptures, and prints. Condition: Very good condition. Some separation to corners of frame.
