Virginia folk art miniature portrait, watercolor on paper or cardstock, depicting the profile of a young woman with short brunette hair, wearing a white dress with coral ribbon at her sleeve. Eglomise mat and molded, lemon gilt frame. Unsigned. Sight – 6 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W. Framed – 10 1/2" H x 9 1/2" W. Early 19th century. Provenance: Descended in a family with ties to the Charlottesville and Petersburg, Virginia areas. Note: this watercolor bears similarities to other portraits produced in this region during the same period by artists including Caleb Davis, Charles Burton, David Boudon, and Francis Cezeron. CONDITION: Some spots of foxing lower right of image, overall even toning to paper. Some loss, crazing and discoloration to black eglomise mat. Abrasions, spotting and craquelure to frame.
