John T. Bauscher (Kentucky, 1890-1951) oil on board double-sided Impressionist-style portrait painting, 1936. The signed side depicts a caucasian man with a graying beard shown in three-quarters, bust-length view, gazing to the viewer’s right. The verso image depicts an African American man, also shown in three-quarters, bust-length view, who smiles and wears a gray hat, blue shirt, and overalls. Signed and dated to recto, lower right. Housed in a painted, rusticated wooden frame. Sight: 17 3/4 in. H x 14 3/8 in. W. Framed: 24 1/2 in. H x 21 1/4 in. W.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. 2 3/4 inch-long vertical liquid accretion/drip to verso portrait, lower left.
