East Tennessee Figured Cherry Sheraton Butler's Desk, attrib. Knox County. Top pull out drawer with desk interior over three graduated drawers, turned feet. Reeded stiles transition to bulbous turned columns with middle square post turnings having inlaid compass stars on front facings, carved fylfots in relief for outside facings, and round carved petal design on inside facings. Base of columns with scored block design. Base molding in an elaborate pediment design having carved arch pediment and center carved reeded plinth, Six pointed compass star incised on end of plinth. Desk drawer interior with cubby holes and three drawers over two larger lower dovetailed drawers. Cherry primary, poplar secondary. 46 1/2" H x 45 1/8" W x 23 3/4" D. Circa 1830. Provenance: Knoxville, TN collector. Condition: Older refinish, one upper left drawer to desk interior with drawer sides and bottom replaced. The drawer front appears to be original. Wear to drawer sides and supports, some minor abrasions and scattered indentions to top.
