William Henry Watson (United Kingdom, 1831-1921) large oil on canvas painting titled "Glen Finart, Argleshire" depicting a group of cows resting and grazing on a hilly landscape. The title refers to a glen in the highlands of Scotland near Loch Lamond, visible in the background beneath a hazy grey mist and a cloudy blue sky. Signed "W. Watson, 1896" lower right. Titled and attributed on plaque on lower area of frame and on canvas en verso. Housed in a carved Louis XIV style frame. Sight: 23" H x 35 1/4" W. Framed: 29 3/4" H x 41 1/2" W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: Overall craquelure with some light flaking and abrasion, one area in the sky in the upper left corner and one in the lower right corner, approximately 1/4". 2 areas on inpainting, one on the mountain landscape on the right side and another above the cows on the left side, visible under UV light inspection. Overall light wear to frame with loss of carved decoration, approximately 3 1/2".
