Five (5) European Grand Tour carved wooden items and seven (7) desk accessories, 12 items total. 1st-4th items: Two (2) pairs of Italian Baroque style wooden panels carved in high relief, including one (1) pair depicting satyrs, each crouched on a pedestal with scrolling, flowering vines emerging from their arms and one (1) pair depicting two griffins flanking a central shell decoration with scrolling, flowering vines emerging from their tails. Two with loops for hanging, en verso. 5th item: Carved wooden figurine depicting The Lion Monument, or the Lion of Lucerne, a rock relief in Lucerne, Switzerland, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in 1820-21 by Lukas Ahorn. Items ranging in size from 2 7/8" H x 6 1/2" W to 22" H x 4 1/4" W. 6th-12th items: Seven (7) desk accessories, including one (1) Neo-Classical gilt bronze inkwell with a phoenix finial and a footed base; two (2) cast bronze inkwell holders with applied buck heads and raised letters reading "Lynn Russell" and "F E Russell"; two (2) cut glass inkwells with sterling silver lids, both stamped "Sterling"; one (1) cast iron fly paperweight with brass legs; and one (1) small snuff box comprised of an animal hoof and mounted on a lead base. Ranging in size from 1 3/4" H x 3" W to 5 1/2" H x 8" W. Most items with museum accession numbers.
PROVENANCE: The collection of a Tennessee institution.
CONDITION: All items in overall good condition with general surface wear. 1st-4th items: Areas of natural age shrinkage, one griffin with 1/2" area of loss to ear. 6th-12th items: Tarnish to sterling silver lids. Legs to fly are slightly loose.
