Ten (10) straw work boxes, some possibly Napoleonic Prisoner of War items, including miniature dome top chest, miniature barrel and various size boxes, comprised of cardstock or wood with dyed straw-covered surfaces. Geometric and pictorial designs including flowers, star, and houses. Six (6) with paper lined interiors. One (1) box with ink inscription reading "Margaretha Barbara Dohfel 1801…" to underside of base, one (1) monogrammed "R." to underside of base, one (1) box with illegible pencil inscriptions to domed lid. Ranging in size from 1" H x 3 1/2" W x 2 1/4" D to 3 7/8" H x 9 3/4" W x 5 1/2" D. All or most likely European, 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Patricia Kiegel, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with wear, insect damage to be expected from age and manner of use. Areas of loss, largest 3" x 1 1/8", to straw work, areas of natural age shrinkage, losses to wood, largest 1/8" x 9 3/4". Some paste repairs, largest 1", to cardstock boxes.
