Ladies choker style necklace featuring forty-three (43) TN freshwater pearls. The necklace is 19" L. Note: Tennessee Freshwater Pearls are harvested from mussels. The mussels respond to irritants like tiny parasites or pieces of shell by secreting increasing and very thin layers of nacre around them until a pearl is formed. More than a hundred species of mussels were once found in Tennessee waterways, but there are now fewer than 80 due to harvesting and pollution. In 1979 the state legislature named the freshwater pearl the state gem.
