Chinese carved jade censer, fitted as a lamp; the lid having pierced and open work floral pierced design, attached by means of a decoratively engraved brass hinge to an octagonal body having eight ring handles, raised on four octagonal feet and fitted with a tiered, pierced carved hardwood stand. Censer base accommodates a bulb socket. 13 1/4"H x 8 1/2"W. 19th century and later. Provenance: descended in a founding family of the Moore-McCormack Shipping Line. Condition: Base of hardwood stand with break to underside stretcher, top pierced finial appears to be a different and possibly later piece of jade; likely modified for use as a lamp in the early 20th century.
