After Franz Xavier Winterhalter (Germany, 1806-1873) oil on canvas full-length portrait of Napoleon III (1808-1873), the first President of France (as Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte) from 1848 to 1852 and the Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870. Depicts the subject dressed in military attire and an ermine robe, holding a gold scepter and reaching towards his sword with the other hand, a crown resting on the draped table to his right. He stands before a backdrop of red drapery with detailed gold embroidery, and a glimpse of landscape is visible from behind. Housed in a carved giltwood frame with egg and dart and reed and ribbon details. Sight: 14 1/8" H x 9 3/4" W. Framed: 23" H x 18 5/8" W. Mid/late 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Chattanooga, TN collection.
CONDITION: Painting has been relined, overall craquelure. Some areas of inpainting to lower portion of the work along the fur cloak and on the lower border, visible under backlight examination. Some light buckling to canvas. Some losses to gilt on frame. Painting has been relined.
