J. B. Magee (Washington Co., Virginia) stoneware pottery jar with cobalt floral decoration and lug handles. Stamped "J. B. Magee and 4", denoting capacity, below the rim. 12 7/8" H. 2nd half of the 19th century. Provenance: Brad Swanson Collection, Abingdon, VA. Note: This jar was exhibited in the "Legacy in Clay: Pottery of Washington County, Virginia" 2005 exhibit, William King Regional Arts Center, Abingdon, VA. It was also illustrated in the "Legacy in Clay" museum exhibit catalog. This piece is similar to another Magee jar illustrated in the book "Great Road Style: The Decorative Arts Legacy of Southwest Virginia & Northeast Tennessee", Betsy K. White, University of Virginia, page 144, figure 129. CONDITION: Firing flaws to the body, some unevenness to rim, in the making.
