1st item: Hepplewhite mahogany side chair, arched and molded crestrail centered by a carved tablet with curved sides enclosing an egg and dart design, over a three-lobed pierced splat with curved center section suggesting a stylized tulip and leaves design, joined at the tapered waist by a band of ribbon molding. The seat is upholstered in yellow damask over the rails, straight on three sides and curved in front. Four square and sharply tapering molded legs. 37"H x 21"W x 18"D. British, circa 1785. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor, Nashville, Tennessee. 2nd item: Federal period mahogany Hepplewhite side chair, "balloon" back with interlaced splats joined by a carved swag design, slip in seat upholstered in rose damask, plain front, and square tapered and molded legs joined by plain stretchers. 36"h x 20" w x 16"d. Probably English, circa 1790. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor, Nashville, Tennessee. Condition: 1st item: Numerous cracks and repairs to splat and shoe, scattered abrasions, surface has been cleaned but retains old dark color. 2nd item: Rear seat blocks missing, 2 breaks and repairs to strechters, wear and some small stains to upholstery.
