Jan Frederik Pieter Portielje (Dutch, 1829-1908), large oil on panel painting, untitled interior scene of woman and girl in Edwardian dress. The woman is pulling a book from a cabinet and the seated child is holding a book in her lap. A doll is resting on a nearby chair. Condition: some blistering and flaking near the center of the painting, otherwise good condition. Signed "Portielje Antwerp" lower left. Sight: 29"H x 23-1/2" W. Framed: 37"H x 31" W. Framed in molded gilt frame. Late 19th century. Biography courtesy of AskArt: A Dutch portrait painter, especially of aristocratic persons, Jan Portielje studied in Amsterdam and later in Antwerp. After this period of training he spent two years in Paris and traveled in France and Germany. Settling in Brussels, he made a name for himself as a portrait painter, especially in English circles.
