North Italian or South German Baroque tabernacle form walnut desk or bureau bookcase. The upper section features a center cabinet with a scenic inlaid door depicting a castle scene flanked on each side with locking drawers with scenic landscape scenes. The drawers are paneled in the Pietra Dura and Pietra Paesina technique with Dendritic Limestone tablets. The interior of the cabinet contains two drawers and is lined with French Toile wallpaper. The lower case contains two candle slides over a hinged slant front writing surface inset with felt. The interior of the desk is fitted with drawers and slides, which when open reveal a hidden compartment. The desk sits over a bureau that contains two tiers of half drawers and two full-length drawers and rests on bun feet. The secretary is inlaid with exotic woods and each drawer and cabinet has a locking escutcheon. 72 1/2" H x 40" W x 22" D. Late 18th/early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Pia Stratton, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: The ogee base molding and bun feet have been replaced. Wear to the inlaid scenes on the cabinet door and to the general surfaces. Some natural and some age related cracks to the tablets.
