Edwin Hughes (English, 1851-1914) oil on canvas painting of a woman in 18th century style floral dress, sheer shawl and bonnet, seated on a bench against a garden wall, looking up from a book with a surprised expression. Signed lower left "Edwin Hughes" and dated 1878. Later giltwood and composition molded frame with openwork edges. Sight – 21" H x 13 1/2" W. Framed – 29" H x 21" W. CONDITION: Relined with light craquelure. Minute puncture at lower left edge. Blacklight indicates inpainting to areas of veil over forehead and areas of the left and right cheek. Inpainting also indicated in the fold of dress and a few scattered areas to background.
